Questions

1. To me this article says that our ground water is not doing so well. it is saying that the salt water is going in the ground and contamonating it.

2.According to the article, who is taking a lot of water out of the aquifer?
the office buildings, schools and high rise apartements use alot of water from the aquifer because theyhave to provide water to many people. In sudirman there are so many buildings that it may lead to a crack on the road.

3.If you take a lot of water from the aquifer, what three things happen?
we've been taking alot of the water so now there are holes in the ground. The sea water has also found an easier way to enter the ground water so now the ground water isn't very fresh and is now salty. Now that some of the water is salty it is not very good and is not clean enough to use everyday uses and people that use ground water are very unfortunate if the salt water comes in.

4.What is the punishment for taking more water than your permit allows?
If the offices or appartments take more water than the permit than they have to pay up to 5 million rupiah or spend 6 months in jail. This is not a very good thing because the people there can pay the 5 million very easily and would not go to jail unless they were bankrupt and that is very rare.

5.Do you think this punishment will stop people taking too much water from the aquifer? Why?
yes and no, because some of the companies would probably notice that the ground water is slowly decreasing and start using a different source. some of the companies will just go "oh well" and go on with there life.

6.Jakarta’s aquifers are being contaminated by sea water. What else is contaminating Jakarta’s groundwater?
Human waste is also contamonating the aquifer because the septic tanks leak and contamonait the water. It is not a good idea of having a well close by a septic tank is not a very good idea because the septic tanks will contaminate the water in the well.

7.What evidence is there for the additional contamination in number 6?
Sometimes when people have wells and their neighbor has a septic tank close by that your water will be contaminated by human waste.

Julian, I'm glad you've finished this assignment now. #1 had to do with the title, which really had nothing to do with salt water intrusion. I'm not sure where you got that. #7 was looking for more of a scientific answer, in this case provided by the institute from Bandung. Additionally, your graphic was good, but not what the article was about.
